Camping at Meemure

This was my 3rd visit to Meemure and this was after 6 years of the 2nd visit. When I had my first visit in 2004, it was the time that Meemure was getting popular with ‘සූරිය අරණ’ film. In those days it was a village which was hardly developed. That means there was only a single vehicle to the entire village and we could see people carrying goods by ‘තවලම’.

Waterfalls of Colombo District – Pathetic side of the story

One of my intention of writing this report is to show you the heart breaking current states of the these precious waterfalls. There is nothing attractive in these pictures but you can compare the state of these waterfalls two years ago, with Ashan’s report and the pathetic state of same, today

Remains from King Saddhatissa Era

It was yet again a day with a not so appealing forecast but I just couldn’t stay back in my quarters so this time got together with few of my staff members who were on leave and decided to do a trishaw ride around Iginiyagala. We came to Namal oya junction and waited until Danushka arrived because he was our guide for the first two locations.

Heritage of ancient Magama, the capital of Ruhuna kingdom

ruled by regional kings such as Mahanaga and Kawantissa. Archeological monuments scattered around which belongs to Anuradhapura era silently express its ancient glory. Buddhist heritage of Magama is centered around the four main stupas namely Tissamaharama chaitya, Sandagiri vehera, Yatala chaitya and Menik vehera.

Enjoying the beauty of Pambahinna-Kalthota road and visiting at ancient places of Kalthota

My objective of this trip was to visit at historical and pre historical places in Kalthota area. As our schedule was so tight we stayed previous day night at Belihuloya. The owner of Sun hill Holiday resort was kind and helpful. (I contacted this place from info-lanka website). After having our breakfast, started the journey towards Pamabahinna.

Mullegama to Pitakumbura through the Nilgala Forest

Ok this time it was an area I have not traveled around much and this stretch which extends from Iginiyagala to Bibila is also known as one of the most scenic rides by many. My intentions were mainly on hunting historically important locations. So on a random day I headed towards Rathmalgahaella with one of my staff member from the area.

Hunting cascades continues (Pelmadulla to Imbulpe)

The Monsoons seems to be coming to an end and most of the waterfalls were at full flow so the temptation was too much that I could handle so finally decided to give it a shot though I was not feeling very well. As usual within few minutes after the idea popped out I gave a call to Lahiru who simply loves waterfalls and he was in to it within no time. So as planned we met on the next morning at Avissawella and took off earlier than expected.

Sri Pada via Uda Maliboda (My 6th Climb to Sacred Mountain)

We all met at Avissawella at sharp 11.00 as discussed earlier. We took a bus to Deraniyagala and got in to the Uda Maliboda bus which left Deraniyagala at 12.30 p.m. After reaching the Udamaliboda tea factory we hired two Tri wheelers to the base of First fall. After spending some time there we visited the second fall after a tiring walk through a footpath. But the journey was rewarding. We had a safe bath in the base pool and had our lunch there.

Ideal Day-out – Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya

I took the 5.30am bus from Nugegoda to Kandy and reached there by 9.30am (frustratingly slow going) and met Sanjeewa at the station. Then I went to see those 3 musketeers (actually 3 innocent and playful bunnies that I had mentioned in my previous report Nuwara Eliya & Welimada – New Dimensions). To my joy, they were playing with each other. I wanted to give them something to eat but Sanjeewa said that we could do it in the afternoon coz I was planning on returning on 3.00 pm training.

Searching for Rabbits on top of Havagala (1400m)

Finally the monsoons seem to be over and it was all what I needed to stretch my muscles a bit. Following my last visit to Ihala Galagama I jotted down the name of beautiful mountain range called Havagala which is linked to the Ravana folklore “The arrow released in war games by King Ravana is said to have pierced seven mountains and penetrated two more mountain peaks.

Quick Visit To Kanneliya ( Bio diversity Hot Spot )

This was arranged as a family trip as I wanted to take my parents and my brother and his wife to a relaxing, less adventures place close to nature. They had been complaining that “Umba hamadama thaniyama trip yanawa..Apiwath enkkan yanawako” So I picked Kanneliya . Our plan was to visit much easier (with minimum duration) trials as Cave, Giant creeper and Anagimala falls and stay the night there and return home next day. In fact I returned same night as I had an exam next day.

Conquering the Buluthota Pass on 3 wheels

It has long been one of my dreams to travel along the A17 but every time we tried to organize this for one reason or other it didn’t take place. This time it was a spur of the moment thought that triggered this off and less than 24 hours later we were on the A17. :-) To make things more adventurous we decided to take the journey using a 3 wheeler. Suraj with his tuk tuk has been our trusted accomplice on previous trips and we roped him in this time as well.
