Loitering around Ampara

Ampara had been in the ‘to do’ list for far too long. Untidy circles and notes scribbled in red permanent ink makes reading my maps of the Ampara area quite a difficult task. There is such a lot to see and I had not seen any of it. Was waiting for a chance to scoot off to Ampara.

Four Day Trip Visiting Buddhist Vihara and other Important Sites in East

We left Colombo at about 11.30am on 10th October 2011 and reached Kantale at about 4.30 pm.Up to Habarana it was normal traffic but beyond few vehicles and broad wide carpet road. We were cruising at 110KMPH, but slowed down close to Kantale as traffic cops were in the road with speed check gun.

Achievement of the Hang on target at Namunukula

Before the Sun wake up, we were busy in examination on 1:50,000 maps, to ascertain how & why we loss our goal during the last exploration. After such a hard trekking (not less than 13+3 =16km on foot) in the previous day, the crew was still aggressive to re-do the hike & not known the meaning of giving up. Having an idea on the road (Jeep track) network at the tea estates in and around Namunukula range, we decided to follow the path of the previous day as much as possible with our jeep & reach the village where we suspended our exploration last day.

The lost aim at Namunukula

Existence of nine peaks was caused to name the range as Namunu- Kula. It was the 12th highest mountain in SL. The highest peak out of 9 was climbed by many hikers each year; but from Spring Valley side which was considered as the formal path. Our ambition was to explore the whole 9 peaks from Passara side which was not popular trail and even done by nobody in popular travel forums.

Bird Watching in Nuwara Eliya

Came to Nuwara Eliya town and went to Galways forest which is on Welimada road few kilometers from Victoria park. Though we went in at around 11 this man made forest in the middle of the town is a bird’s paradise. Due to high canopy as the sunlight does not show much even at that time it was full with some uncommon birds such as Velvet fronted Nuthatch, Grey cannery flycatcher, Bar tailed Flycatcher,Yello Bulbul , Great Tit etc.

Memorable Pilgrimage to Kebiliththa (මහ සියඹලාව දේවාලය)

The story is that the God Kataragama had met his future wife Walli amma on a rainy day near a tamarind tree at this place which is also called Siyambalawa devalaya (මහ සියඹලාව දේවාලය).We were asked to be refrained from consuming all kinds of meat and alcohol for one week before the date and we bought fruits and other stuff which are needed for the pujawa (පූජාව) the day before.Mohan been a veteran organized a couple of cooks with all the dry rations needed.

Journey from Kalupahana to Ohiya through the Devil’s Staircase.

Sun was shining in the sky as a silver globe. We were on our way to another adventurous journey heading Namunukula. The small open canopy jeep was packed with 5 Lakdasun members. The itinerary of the day was to reach Passara via Beragala & Pilklinton point @ Punagala estate, since it was identified as a much scenic drive. Just as we passed Balangoda; our itinerary was challenged by ourselves. The main role of the same was played by Dinesh, who bucked on the distinctive weather condition prevailing and suggested to change the route.

Trip to Trincomalee and the East coast

We continued on this towards Verugal, hardly any traffic, people or shops on this route. Good idea to have plenty of drinking water, juice, fresh fruits to quench your thirst because one can drink a lot. As it’s hot and humid in this part of no mans land. Sri Lanka has the natural beauty no matter, wherever you may travel and this Mutur – Verugal route is no exception. Continuing along the way enjoy the scenery, assortment of scrubland, marshes, forest patches, rocks, Palmyra groves, reservoir, streams and the lush green vegetation with herds of feeding cattle, displaying a unique beauty of its own. This road has been newly constructed and the old ferries have been replaced with new bridges, some stretches extending 5 to15 Km. had got badly affected due heavy rains in September, as the carpeting has not been laid, the top fill earth has washed away, leaving huge pot holes. That driving through these stretches avoiding the ruts and potholes needs patience and skill. After driving through a never ending nerve wrecking journey finally we reached Valachchenai for a well deserved lunch.

Trip to Jaffna, Nagadeepa

The journey beyond this we could witness the scars of war, huge stretches of Area marked with red tape indicating uncleared land mines, army camps strategically Placed. Our next stop was Kilinochchi, we toured the town and suburbs to explore ,I leave to the readers to their imagination what it would have been like just 17 Months ago.It was getting dark we headed to Jaffna, was around 9.00 we reached Our guest house.

KAHANDAMODARA and beyond

We left early morning at 0500 hours from Colombo by car on 22nd October 2010. The first stop was at our favourite breakfast spot, Leyons, Hanwella close to the 40th Km post. We drove at a leisurely pace taking in the scenery of the surroundings and stopping to take photographs. We turned off at Pelmadulla and went through Embilipitiya. Past the town we stopped near the Chandrikawewa tank bund for a thirst quenching drink of king coconut water and then walked up the bund to enjoy the scenic view of the wewa.

From West Coast to East Coast (Exploring Kumana National Park)

With the reopening of the Kumana national park early this year it had been on our priority list for quite some time and finally we managed to make that dream come true. The camp sites were booked more than three months in advance as there is no other accommodation south of Arugam Bay. Wildlife department is trying to rebuild the destroyed circuit bungalows and hopefully we will get to use them before long.

Kumana – The bird paradise

We started from Colombo around 9PM on Thursday. We bought all the provisions needed from Cargills, Maharagama. We didn’t have a gas cooker or a cylinder as my friend who own those had given them to one of his friends. We tried to buy one for our selves but that too did not work out as all the 2.5Kg tanks were sold out at Laughs. So we decide to cook using firewood. After collecting everyone, it was around 12 PM when we left Colombo, and we managed to pass Lahugala by around 5.30 AM. Rising sun had made some wonderful scenery.
