  • Mannar: Sinking Bungalow with an Unsinkable history and Beauty

During a one of my field visits to Vavniya and Mannar, we had likelihood to visit few archeological and Hindu sacred places in Mannar and Silavaturei. Weather was good but too dry and wind impregnated with dust. Most of the Mannaer main roads are really good and newly rehabilitated. Railway constructions are going on up to thaleimannar. First we visited Biobab tree which is situated in the heart of the Mannar island city.

The Biobab Tree is a huge flowering plant which is unique to Mannar Island. It was brought there by Arabic merchants at 1477. The tree premise is maintained by st. lucis church committee. Tree consists of its circumference 19.51 m and height of 7.50 m.

Thirukedeeswaran Kovil – This Hindu sacred place is located 5 km away from the Mannar city and towards North side. It’s a beautiful and much honored place of the out of five famous kovils which were dedicated to Lord Shiva in ancient era. Others are ThiruKoneswaran (Trincomalee), Naghuleswaran (Kireemalai/Jaffna), Munneswaran (Chilaw). According to some of the Tamil literature, the fifth kovil is called as Thondiswaran (It was located in down south in Sri Lanka and destroyed by Protégés, but exact place is a still doubtful and not clearly identified at all).

I couldn’t get any good pictures of this Kovil as it was restricted by the Kovil management committee. On our way, there was a colorful Tamil procession at Mannar- Vavniya road.

Doric Bungalow

This is the house of the first British governor of Ceylon, Sir Frederic North. The description board at there says the artistic and architectural features of the bungalow. The location is open to shore margin of the Silavaturei beach and some of the walls were fallen to sea side already. The entire area is very much beautiful.
