  • Summit of NW province (Bisogala range)

The map

Conquering the highest peak of North Western province was in my bucket list for a while and Niroshan’s report was bit helpful in achieving it. Actually to get to the summit its not much difficult. Bisogala range is located at the center of Rambodagalla forest reserve and there are few peaks of it called Igurugala, Sudugala, Rilagala, Gurugala, Bisogala, Beruwagala, Pahangala etc. Out of these Igurugala, Rilagala and Sudugala are located at the same summit and they do not provide a good view point. The most scenic peak is Bisogala.

Our main intention was to reach the highest point so we headed towards Buluwala and took a road to Rantetikanda. We were shown a small foot path towards the summit from the village and within no time we reached the summit forest which was an abandoned Coffee and Cocoa estate. To our surprise there were leeches to greet us too. With the aid of GPS we did manage to find few view points. Out of those Rilagala was the only location which provided some camping space with a view.

After hanging around a bit we returned back to the village where the villages said to us that Bisogala rock was the most scenic point so we decided to give it a try on another day. While returning back to Buluwala we didnt forget to reach the road side view point called Pahangala which was located just before the newly built Bo maluwa.

next destination was Pahangala

From Buluwala we headed towards Alawala where an ancient anicut(7.471314,80.453464) over Kospotu oya and an rock inscription(7.471683,80.454872) could be found. We also didnt forget to refresh our selves from Kospotu oya before departing.

Our next visit was few weeks back where we decided to explore the Bisogala rocky peak. We took a bus from Kurunegala and got down of a Keppetigala bus at Katupilagolla ambalama. From there we crossed the paddyfields and started crawling along the rock until we reached the ridge. The scenery from the rock was splendid and colourful. after climbing along the rock for a while we decided to cross over to the proper ridge and we continued along it until “Atha kadulla” was reached. This is the point where the two foot paths from Udumulla and Morathiha meets. From here onwards it was a small hike towards the Bisogala pointed peak. On our way we came across few ruins which locals believed as ruins of a palace.

The pointed rock provided a 270 degree view of Kurunegala, Ibbagamuwa,Keppetigala , Ridigama and Yatawatta. Please refer the images for landmarks. This peak is also believed to be the point where the queens of the king leaped and died. On our way back we took the foot path to Morathiha and we also lost track of the path at many instances because its not used anymore. At Morathiha we refreshed our selves and departed towards Kurunegala to end our hike.
