Re-visited Adisham and Nine arch Bridge

Adisham Hall, or Adisham Bungalow is a country house near Haputale, in the Badulla District, Sri Lanka. At present it houses the Adisham Monastery a congregation of St. Sylvester.

The house was built in 1931 by an English aristocrat and planter Sir Thomas Villiers, former Chairman of George Steuart Co, a trading and estate agency based in Colombo. Sir Thomas was a grandson of Lord John Russell and descendant of the Dukes of Bedford. It was designed by R. Booth and F. Webster in Tudor and Jacobean style, on 10 acres (40,000 m2) of land. Adisham Hall played host to many prominent personalities of the colony until the retirement of Sir Thomas, after which it was sold to Sedawatte Mills. In 1961 it was purchased by the Roman Catholic Church and was subsequently converted to a monastery. The house is well preserved along with its period fittings and furniture, and is open to visitors.

Waterfalls, on the way to Belihuloya to Bandarawela

This was located at the Badulla- Ratnapura main road. It is about 100 hike from the main road to the base of the waterfall.  The 6m-high Brampton Falls is set amongst tropical jungle and flows to the Walawe River. It derives its water from the eastern slopes of the Papulugala Mountain (1530m). It is situated 10km from Belihuloya, near the Brampton Tea Estate (at the 106th-mile post).

Nayabedda/ St. Catherines 2 Mountain Hike (1943m)

Nayabedda Mountain is on our list for a long time as we have seen it on our Wangedigala hike. This mountain is marked in Metric Map as “St. Catherines 2” and the 1 should be St. Catherine’s Seat which is also marked in the Metric Map without the word “Seat”. When I explore this location in Metric map I realized the name given in here and the name we currently use. Actually we are using the estate name for this mountain. But the real name is “St. Catherines 2”.

Sidupiyanila to Lipton Seat

Sidupiyanila is a catholic seminary where they train students who are at their final stage of being a priest. This place was the home for our first trip as well as for 4 another trips.

Mahiyanganaya road tour and dried waterfall hunting

This story is relating with my day 01 article about the night at Telgamu oya. On the second day we left from telgamu oya to Mahiyanganaya via the huge forest. Once we came to the Mahiyanganaya we went to the Sorabora wewa which was very famous in Sri Lanka as it made by a giant called Bulatha.

Train journey to Bandarawela…..

The long weekend at the end of July was long awaited as it’s the only long weekend for 2015 until Christmas. We planned a train trip to up-country with cousins, an annual event during August school holidays. However for the 31st the train was fully booked so we had to reserve the train for the 30th – which gave us a bonus day to enjoy the cool climes.

Glory of Uma oya and many more around Ettampitiya

Time to solve a mystery and this time it was a success. Uma oya falls was another mysterious fall marked on Sri Lanka road map just like Galagama falls. Somehow with the help of Priyanjan I did locate it on Google earth and paying a visit was the next step. I have been loitering around Badulla for some time now and on two other occasions I did cover up few places around Badulla, Bandarawela & Wiyaluwa.

A Pinch of Bandarawela – Pic Journey 9…

We took a tuk-tuk and headed along the Punagala road. The morning was chilly and the smell of wet earth wafting through the air was surprisingly good. This is another way to the iconic Lipton’s Seat. Usually people take the Haputale-Dambethenna road but this is also an alternative should you happen to start from Bandarawela. After about 5km, we came to a ‘Y’ junction where the Punagala road continued to the left while the right one goes to the Lipton’s Seat. It’s nicely carpeted and in good condition compared to the Punagala road.

I’ve been to Lipton’s Seat couple of times so decided to skip it for now. We carried on along Punagala road for about 3 more kms till Doolgolla where Doolgolla Ella is located. She’s at the edge of Craig Estate very close to the main road. You can see her from the road as well. There’s a shop and an estate signage just passing a bridge. That is where you have to stop and then take the tiny footpath to the right to reach the base of the falls that is only about 50m away.

Secrets of Bandarawela

It was one of those random weekends and I didn’t have any scheduled places to visit so I headed towards Badarawela. It was almost 1pm when I got down at Halpe and my first place of interest was Gangarama temple. Though the Uva tourist board had put up a notice board, this temple didn’t have any historical importance. Next target was Yahalamaditta temple.

Hit Hard by the Drought – Pic Journey 7…

We took a Welimada-Bogahakumbura bus (alternatively you can take a Welimada-Boralanda bus which will take you to the turn off towards Alawathugoda) and got off at Bogahakumbura town and hired a tuk-tuk to reach the destination which was about 3-4km away. Surprisingly enough most of the people knew about the waterfall even though it’s not a prominent one. The road is under construction and in a somewhat bad condition.

We reached the Alawathugoda village passing the Community Hall where we had to walk as the road had been concreted and left to rest. It was a good 600-800m walk which took its toll on Podi who kept panting all the way. Unfortunately there was very little water and it made us feel very down. Well, you can’t always be lucky and see them in full flow I guess.

The Dawn of a New Era – Rail Hike Stage 01

The perfectly square-shaped rocks had been put together by a very thin layer of a special mixture (about 1cm) and it’s really surprising that she’s been standing all these years. The mastermind behind this magnificent structure is Mr. P. K. Appuhamy, who was a resident of Keppetipola born in 1870 and died at 1951.
