Bomburu Ella, Ohiya & Horton Plains

Started our journey from kaduwela at around 6.30am only stopping for breakfast at kuruwita. It was time to get our cameras out for the first time at the first attraction for the day being surathalie ella. After having lunch at Welimada we proceeded towards Bomburu ella. The condition of the road from Welimada to Bomburu ella was not in a good state.. It took us about 1 hour to travel the approx. distance of 15km from welimada but it was definitely worthwhile since one of the most beautiful waterfalls that I have seen was awaiting us in its’ magnificent splendor…

Thotupola and Diyagama nature trails – Horton Plains

We started our journey from Colombo Fort at 8 pm on a Friday eve. The crew was four. We booked the tickets for Badulla night mail train in advance. Even though I tried to get some sleep on the train it was really difficult for me. After eight and a half hours, the train arrived to Pattipola station around 4.30 am. We had to wait 1.5 hours till the sun rises to start our journey.

Hiking Bambarakanda to Horton Plains

We leave Colombo by hired van at around 7AM and able to reach Bambarakanda rest at around 1PM. After having lunch we started to climb. We go alone the road heading to top of Bambarakanda falls. The road goes through the Udaweriya tea state. Before getting dark we were able to reach near the devil’s staircase. On a side of a road in a level surface we were able to put up our two tents. It’s a beautiful full moon poya day. We can clearly see the bright stars all over the sky.

Horton Plains to Hatton via Diyagama (Dayagama) and Agarapathana

The plan of this trip was quite straight forward. Take the night mail on a Saturday night, reach Ohiya early morning, Relax the rest of the day at Ginihiriya wildlife bungalow, walk along the Dayagama trek on the following day and catch the intercity express from Thalawakele (3.00p.m.) back to Colombo. Still there was one important thing which we overlooked. We did not book the train for the return journey assuming that we will be able to buy tickets from Thalawakele. In the back of our minds we thought that even if we miss the train we could catch a bus back to colombo.
