Mystical Chundikulam…

After a tiring day around Mullaitivu it was time for a relaxing evening. So we were headed on a rugged road from Iyakachchi towards Kaddaikadu. On the way at Kuweni junction we came across some ruins of fort Beschutter which is one out of the tree forts which were built around Elephants pass area.

On the A9 Road to Jaffna 2010

Once reaching Anuradhapura town by road and travel up to Jaffna junction_( Yapane Handiya) its KM199 from that point to Jaffna. At Ranbewa it’s connected to the A9 road extending from Kandy to Jaffna. The road came to prominence during the war
Once reaching Vavuniya the gate way pictured below is the entrance to the North the predominantly Tamil area.

Around Sri Lanka in 8 Days – Part 2

We then set off towards Vavuniya hoping to reach Killinochchi before noon and meet our friendly soldier who took us around the surrounding area. Just before Iranamadu, we visited the statue of one of our great heroes, Cpt. Saliya Aladeniya who sacrificed his life while trying to protect the telecommunication tower there.

A Four Day Trip to Jaffna & Mullathivu

The main purpose of this trip was to visit important places in Jaffna peninsula and our war-hero monuments. We also could observe the rapid development in Killinochchi, Mullathiv areas and the change of lifestyles of people after the end of 30-year war.

Two day Trip to Jaffna

After Omanthai you find army detachments and sentry points all along road up to Jaffna but you feel very safe. At couple of places you have to get out from the vehicle and show ID etc for record purpose but does not take much time.In Kilinochchi you get a very good place run by the army for refreshments and a few kilo meters after the turn off the road was gravel and dusty. We reached Elephant pass around 6.15 and it was getting dark.

Trip to Jaffna, Nagadeepa

The journey beyond this we could witness the scars of war, huge stretches of Area marked with red tape indicating uncleared land mines, army camps strategically Placed. Our next stop was Kilinochchi, we toured the town and suburbs to explore ,I leave to the readers to their imagination what it would have been like just 17 Months ago.It was getting dark we headed to Jaffna, was around 9.00 we reached Our guest house.

Trip to Jaffna

We reached Medawachchiya by 4.00 am. From Medawachchiya to Vavunia, the road condition is not good mainly due to construction work. The stretch is only 26 km but it took nearly 1 ½ hours as the traffic is heavy and our car could not proceed at the same phase with majority of busses which came from all parts of the country. We reached Vavuniya by 5.30 am and proceeded straight to Omantai Army Check Point.By that time, dawn was arriving and we were surrounded by lot of vehicles going towards the same destination.
