Visit to “Govinda Hela” in Siyabalanduwa After Handover New House to Poor Family In Kalawelaragama

We got information regarding another poor family in Kalawelaragama in Monaragala. Last September month we went there & saw their actual family condition. After that we decided to build a new house for them. Under lots of difficulties we were able to build a new house for them. We requested assistance from so many people but only very few people gave their support as usual.

Giants of Siyambalanduwa- Govindahela (558m) and Diggalahela / Degal Hela (480m)

Govinda Hela and Degal Hela / Diggalahela are two gigantic rocks situated at side of A 25 road closer to Siyambalanduwa. This is my hiking notes on those two rocks.

ගෝවින්ද හෙළ | Westminister Abbey

I was waiting for a long holiday to travel around Siyabalanduwa as there are so many places in the list of mine to be visited & it is not worthy to travel Siyabalanduwa for a one day hike & return back on the same day.

Govindahela (Westministers Abbey) and waterfalls of Badalkumbura

Sometime ago while traveling on Ampara – Siyambalanduwa road I saw a giant box shaped rock and got to know the name “Govindahela”. I was fascinated to climb it but had literally no information about it. Later found an article on Lakdasun forum written by a foreign lady who climbed the rock. But that article was not very encouraging as her experience turned out to be a very tough and difficult one. A couple of years later suddenly there came a report on the forum by – of course – Ahsan, who had climbed it, alone, with not much hassle and once again I started living in my dream.

Diggalahela the rock of Siyambalanduwa (450m) and Bingoda cave complex!

Degal hela (Diggalahela) is also known as Rock of Siyambalanduwa. This isolated monadnock was first seen while climbing Govinda hela last year, since then it was a dream for me. Though I found a guide to show me the way the weather was always turning from bad to worse when ever I plan to do so. On a Saturday early morning I met Ajith from 2nd mile post at Siyambalanduwa and proceeded towards Helamulla ancient temple which lies at the base of the mountain where I was introduced to Sena who promised to take us uphill. The weather god’s made sure that a bit of drizzle would make it bit more challenging to us. We curved along the mountain climbing boulders and reached a slope which was not much difficult to tackle and at last we were almost at the top after a one and a half hour hike. The summit has two rocks hence Degal hela(450m).

Westminster Abbey the Pride of Siyambalanduwa (ගෝවින්ද හෙළ 558m)

Westminister Abbey is an awkward name seen on each and every map of Sri Lanka. So I did a Google search when I was schooling few years (15 years) back to find out that this was an ancient place in SL called Govinda Hela. So I had done my reading and planned to go there someday but never thought I would do this on that particular day.
