නකල්ස් යනු රක්ෂිත වනාන්තරයකි. මධ්‍යම කඳුකරයේ උතුරු සීමාව තුළ පිහිටි මෙම රක්ෂිතය හෙක්ටයාර් 22000 කින් පමණ සමන් විතය. එහි සාම්ප්‍රදායික කුඹුරු ගොවිතැන ජීවනෝපාය කර ගත් ගම්මාන 50කට අධික ගණනක් පවතින අතර ස්වාභාවික නිර්මාණ රාශියක් පිරී රමණීය භූමි ප්‍රදේශයකි.

දුමෙන් බර මිටියාවත නොහොත් දුම්බර මිටියාවත ලෙස නම් කළ හෙක්ටයාර 22,000 ක පමණ භූමි වපසරියකින් යුත් නකල්ස් වනපෙත ලංකාවේ අතිශය වැදගත් රක්ෂිත වන පියසකි.

දුම්බර වනපෙත යනු මධ්‍යම කඳුකරයේ උතුරු හා ඊසාන දිග මායිම්ව වන්නට පැතිරුණු ජෛව විවිධත්වයෙන් අනූන වනපියසකි. දේශයටම අනන්‍ය වූ ශාක වර්ග, මල් වර්ග සේම සත්ව වර්ග ජීවත් වන මෙම අඩවිය හෙක්ටයාර දහස් ගණනකින් යුක්ත වේ. විවිධ හැඩතල ගත් කඳු ශිඛර, පතන හා තැනිතලා සේම අලංකාර දිය ඇලි සහ ජල පෝෂක ප්‍රදේශ රැසකින් පරිපූර්ණ නක්ලස් වනපියස ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් මාතලේ හා මහනුවර දිස්ත්‍රික්කවලට අයත් වේ.

It was 9 Years back when I first came to know about this magical location but somehow I couldn’t pull it off due to various reasons. Not like 9 years back now I was fully equipped with lot of information which aided me to pull this off! I think I dont need to explain the route details since its documented well in previous reports and almost every one is aware about the trail.

After two years of planning and reading trip reports in Lakdasun and posts on Elakiri about Doowili ella, finally we were able to gather 4 people (well, in the beginning there were 6 and on the day sprit was remain), who were extremely needed to do this hike.

This is actually a three day tour and it had a hike to Manigala in the day in middle. On day one, we (three males and two females) got onto a bus at about 11.30 a.m from Kandy to reach Dambulla. We reached Dambulla in about two hours time and had the lunch there. Then we took a Mahiyanganaya via Kalu ganga bus to reach Kalu ganga where we had a generous host.

Thunhisgala (1627m)/Kalupahana is a prominent peak of Kncukles massif sitauted at center of Knuckles forest reserve. This was my back to back journey to Kalupahana within two weeks after attempted hike to Thunhisgala but ended up it’s side peak.

Thunhisgala/ Kalupahana is a prominent peak of Knuckles massif with 1627m height. It is situated at center of Knuckles area-Kalupahana which was covered with Cardamom estates 30 years ago. The reason for the name Thunhisgala is due to three peaks in climbing. (Thun+His+Gala) (තුන්+හිස්+ගල). Alternative meaning is three ridges meet together to form the mountain.

Bambarella to Thangappuwa is a popular trail amoung the knuckles trekkers. There are several attractions can be seen in this trail.

So me, with 3 of my friends – Ashan, Chinthaka and Dinuka – packed our bags and departed to Nava maama’s place in Meemure on 20th April with cheerful minds. Much to our dismay, a heavy shower started in the evening of 20th, shattering all our dreams of making it to the summit. Nava maama casted a totally negative outlook of tomorrow’s proceedings, as it could be observed that streams of water sliding down the Western face of Lakegala, from where we are supposed to climb. Nevertheless we insisted on going as far as we could, and Nava maama had no other option but to agree J Next day we started the journey from Meemure with the guide introduced by him, Chanaka, and reached the base of the rocky surface after nearly a 5 hour struggle. It was clear to us that any attempt to proceed further would be suicidal. Such a venture would only result in consolidation of the already established opinion that Lakegala is a deadly peak. I am not going to further elaborate on our first attempt to climb Lakegala, since our second and the successful attempt also covers the same details up to this point. Only difference here was that the climb required extra energy due to forest patch being infested with leeches and rocky surface being extra slippery.
