Visit to Weherahena Temple

e started form Galle at about 10.00 in the morning. It was just about a 50 km drive and we arrived there before noon. The main things to notice are the large Buddha statue and the old tunnel system in the temple.

Hidden cave temples of Matara

During my waterfall hunting at Matara district, I have noted there are some old cave temples as well. Some of them are belong to Anuradhapura and Pollonnaruwa periods. These Buddhist temples are popular among nearby villagers. But not familiar to others. Therefore I decided to note down some information about these places to others also.

Hunting off cascades of Matara – Deniyaya area

I spend two days in my busy schedule to catch splendid beauty of these hidden beauties of Matara-Deniyaya area. I started my day with a friend from Matara town towards Mulatiyana. We got into a bus towards Kotapola from Matara and out first attraction was Kosgahadola Ella.

Visit to historically important Buddhist Viharas and Temples in the MATARA District

During the past Matara was called “Mahathota”. The river running through Matara is ‘Nilwala River. There was a wide area across this river. Hence it was called “Mahathota” which means “The great ferry”. During the past Matara was called “Mahathota”. The river running through Matara is ‘Nilwala River. Trip to Kataragama and Yala national park

We took Galle road and we depart from home early morning 5.30 AM since we are planning to visit Weherahena and Wawrukannala temples in Matara as part of this trip. Took our breakfast at Koggala beach and drive towards Matara and arrived at weherahena around 9 AM. Since this is a week day (Monday) there were only few visitors to the temple and we had good chance to observe the Lord Buddha statue (It says tallest statue in Sri Lanka but not sure since Kandewihara Lord Buddha statue might be taller than that) and also Umang wihara (tunnel) art works as well.
