Galagama Falls via Landuyaya Old Horse Track

This is a waterfall where we need to have a hard hike throughout the day. Even though you come from the usual Nagrak roadside it is more difficult for you to reach up to the turning bend near to the Nagrak Bungalow. Ihala Galagama/ Landuyaya road is the road to Hawagala Mountain.

Camping on Vantage point of Nagrak (1800m)

Vantage point of Nagrak is situated at Non Pareil Estate. It is a nice view point and this is my experience of round trail from Belihuloya to Non Pareil Estate via Galagama Falls and camping at Vantage point.

Breath taking Non Parial tour

Non pariel estate is having 6 divisions. Uggalduwa is the bottom of the world’s end and all the dead bodies can be collect from there. But it is a rough and full day jouney from Uggalduwa to that place. Otherwise continue your journey to Nagrak bunglow, which is located at the top of this mountain range. And there you will find the boarder of Horton Plains and Non Pariel.

Along the Horse Tracks – Galagama Ella…

We reached Belihul Oya and I called Premadasa and got the directions to his place along the Belihul Oya-Landuyaya road. Yeah, you guessed right coz another beautiful waterfall known as Pahanthudawa Ella is also located on this road. Premadasa’s house is in Galpoththenna, Ibbanwala about 3km from Belihul Oya. However we missed him and drove all the way to Ihala Galagama School. It was a good thing coz we could see the Galagama Ella in the far distance and so far higher in the mountains bordering the Horton Plains. The elevation difference was around 1000m (yeah 1km) or probably more. Nagrak Bungalow is located well over 7200ft (almost as high as Sri Pada). Therefore Galagama Ella must be one of the falls located at the highest altitudes in Sri Lanka, of course in closer competition with Baker’s Falls aka Gonagala Ella.

Vantage point of Nagrak (1800m)

Almost one year back I did reach Nagrak to visit Galagama falls and while we were at Nagrak I did note a peak protruding out parallel to Gommolli range and Havagala range. This seemed to be an ideal place to leisurely hang around and this December while we were itching without doing any hikes we thought of giving it a try to stretch out our muscles. As usual early as possible we left and reached Belihul oya at around 7am.

Winding Path to the Misty, Cloudy & Mountainous Land – Nagrak…

We passed the idea this way, that way and the other way and still got nowhere. After what felt like an eternity, we came to the conclusion that we need minimum two nights. We couldn’t anyway afford more therefore settled at two. Having arranged everything we set off on the dawn of Saturday, 21 February. Just a word on the way we were given the instructions by the Nagrak Management. They gave us the account details promptly to deposit money and other than mentioning about the electricity which is available from 6pm to 12 midnight, there was no other information given. It’s a major lapse from their end because the way Fishing Hut Management (click on the link to check the info sent by them) sent out the information was simply brilliant. They had gone to great trouble to put everything in writing so that there was no misunderstanding. We knew exactly what was they were giving and what we had to take. Further, what we could do and shouldn’t do. It was just great and I feel Nagrak Management failed to meet those standards. They have some catching up to do and do it fast coz that small lapse could lead to very unpleasant things and disappointments.

Mystery of Galagama falls finally reveled

Mysteries are to be solved and this time we made sure to put an end to this long lasting mystery. Galagama falls which is very well marked on many maps is a glamorous beauty hidden in the wilderness. It all started many years back when a discussion was started in our forum regarding this mysterious fall. Few years back when Lahiru and I decided to reveal this mystery we ended up with a failure.

Devil’s Staircase, Horton Plains and Bottom of the World’s End drop

ince we have enough time, we decided to go to Devil’s Staircase around 2.00 pm. Road beyond BHR was very good (Concreted / paved). Even though we expect bad road, less than 2 kms from BHR road condition was horrible. After climbing about ½ km we decided to revise the vehicle for ½ km and came back to BHR.
