12 Days Trip to Wellassa & Digamadulla – Day 8

We almost completed 7 days of our trip. Its time to leave from Ampara District. We decided to visit Bibile. We leave from Inginiyagala around 7.30 a.m & we came to Bibile via Namal Oya.

Vandalized Heritage around Sagama (Akkareipattu)

Few years back after the war there were some terrifying incidents in the East especially about vandalism of Archaeology sites by local ethnic population. One of those sites was Sagama Pagoda that was bulldozed and destroyed which lit up a big ethnic issue at that time. I thought it would be nice if I could visit this area and try to explore these sites to give the needed awareness. As always the Book of Ellawala Medananda thero was my guide. So me and my wife left towards Pottuvil early as possible to have some breakfast before initiating a hectic adventure.

Spectacular views from Inginiyagala

I still remember the day I visited Senanayake Reservoir for the 1st time in my life. It was a family trip to Ampara in 2001 & we reached Senanayake Reservoir in the evening around 5pm. Sun was going down. I was totally lost among the sceneries around me and looking at the top of Inginiyalaga Mountain I thought “If I go to the top how the sceneries will be”. Since that day, the idea was in a corner of my mind but due to the distance from Colombo and other various reasons I had to give up several times.

A Three Day Trip without a Destination

We started out at 4 AM on day 1 and move towards Ratnapura on Horana Road. On the way we schemed to move towards Ampara and may be towards Trinco later on. We took a quick breakfast from a small wayside shop on the Horana road at about 6. We had passed Maha Saman Devalaya at Ratnapura so many times but never stopped since we always have been running with a another destination in mind. It was 6.45AM when we reached the Ratnapura Maha Saman Devalaya and there was almost no people there.

Remains from King Saddhatissa Era

It was yet again a day with a not so appealing forecast but I just couldn’t stay back in my quarters so this time got together with few of my staff members who were on leave and decided to do a trishaw ride around Iginiyagala. We came to Namal oya junction and waited until Danushka arrived because he was our guide for the first two locations.

Huffing & Puffing…… from East to West – Nilgala via Himidurawa, Namaloya, Galoya and Rathugala

It dawned to the second day of our cycle tour across the country. By 6.00 a.m. we were on the road leaving Uhana, heading towards Polwatta Junction. The Himidurawa road to Polwatta was great cycling route with lots of scenery and diversity.

මහා වනයේ සැගවුණු මුලගම ගුහාව සොයා ගිය ගමනක් (Mulagama cave Expedition)

Mulagama cave was another random site I noted on a sheet of paper (1:50000 maps) within the Gal Oya Sanctuary and later on only I found the relevant details about it on Ellawala Medhananda Thero’s publication. I have been planning to visit this site for few months and I had been gathering information since then, finally my dream came true.

Family Trip to Gal Oya – Camping at the Shoreline of Senanayake Samudraya

We planned the trip initially to the August school vacation but due to the National Elephant Senses which was on the way we had to reschedule the trip to September. All were enthusiastic on the trip and final number on for the trip was 10 with 3 teenagers, 2 youths and 5 adults. The campsite was booked in advanced and officers were helpful to provide us a campsite despite their strike. Cab service van was booked which was familiar due to the past experiences with the driver/owner of that van.
