Beautiful Trincomalee
Trinco is a destination we haven’t visited for nearly a decade and I always thought of Trinco as “dry and arid”. My recent visit to Trinco really opened my eyes – how green and vibrant Trinco is with its blue lagoons eating into the land at every corner making one wonder whether it’s the lagoon or the ocean! |
VESAK AT TRINCOMALEE 2015
It was Vesak holidays and I wanted to visit some temples just like I did in 2013. Though I have been to Tinco as a kid I have not properly explored this region. So after some intensive planning with the aid of online and offline literature I was all set for this 2015 Vesak expedition. We knew that this was going to be a tough one especially with the extreme heat but we were up to the task. The added advantage was that every Buddhist temple was decorated for Vesak and it was easy to locate. The disadvantage was that it was too crowded since it was a long holiday. |

Around Sri Lanka in 8 Days – Part 1
So on the 15th morning, we (highly excited bunch) left Colombo around 5.30 am. There was ample room in the van since it was only 7 of us (including the driver) and soon we reached Ratnapura and stopped for Breakfast. Kadala, String Hoppers, Red Rice with Kiri Hodi, Sambola and Fish may sound like a feast as we wolfed down the food. Then we reached Udawalawa and stopped around the park to take the breath taking view of the reservoir in. |
Snorkeling at Pigeon Island, Trincomalee
After having a successful tour in Whale & dolphin watching in the morning we came back to the hotel for lunch. Few of our friends who didn’t participate for Whale watching tour had gone for Snorkeling in the morning. They recommended this and after having lunch we also decided to go. Around 3.00PM in the evening we started our journey from hotel with 3 boats. It was a joyful and thrilling ride for every one of us. One boat went to Nilaweli beach to buy tickets for all and other 2 boats directly went to the Pigeon Island. |
Trip to Trinco – Less Frequented Places
We intended to cover Trinco and surrounding places of interest as much as possible and the trip was planned to the minute detail. However unexpected bad weather, poor road conditions and Grease Yaka prevented us from touching all places, meaning another trip when time permits!!!! |
Trip to Galkadawala, Kantale and Lankapatuna
This lodge is an isolated, quiet very simple place and it is far away from human habitat. It’s surrounded by huge trees and gives the real feeling of a forest. You will not be disturbed as there are no TV or telephones, except the hassle of your mobile phone. There are swings and outdoor showers. This is an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. |
Trip to Trincomalee and the East coast
We continued on this towards Verugal, hardly any traffic, people or shops on this route. Good idea to have plenty of drinking water, juice, fresh fruits to quench your thirst because one can drink a lot. As it’s hot and humid in this part of no mans land. Sri Lanka has the natural beauty no matter, wherever you may travel and this Mutur – Verugal route is no exception. Continuing along the way enjoy the scenery, assortment of scrubland, marshes, forest patches, rocks, Palmyra groves, reservoir, streams and the lush green vegetation with herds of feeding cattle, displaying a unique beauty of its own. |
Galkadawala, Kaudulla & Nilaweli – A weekend of Fun and Relaxation
After much planning and anticipation we left Kandy at 8.00 am on 30th October 2010. We had our breakfast of bread, pol sambol and Srinath’s mom’s milk rice (yum yum) just past Palapathwela under a big roadside tree. We proceeded to Dumbulla while munching boiled bada iringu on the way. We bought all our provisions from the Dambulla Cargill’s Foodcity. Fully equipped, we left Dambulla and headed straight to Galkadawala. We reached the lodge by 11.30 am. We were greeted by Kariyawasam, the friendly caretaker. We were stunned by the serene environment and the simple beauty of the lodge. |
Trip to Polonnaruwa, then to Trincomalee
I and three of my friends decided to attend the Somawathi religious function on 8th May. Along with that we decided to go to Aukana and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. So we took off at 2.00 a.m. on 7th May from Kiribathgoda. We used a Maruti 800 as our transportation medium because of its fuel economy. Around 5.00 a.m. we took a left turn from Mirisgoni Oya junction and headed to our first place of interest. |
Exploring Nature & Heritage around the bay of Koddiyar (meaning “Fort by the River”) in Northeastern Coast
After hours of traveling we were at another grate irrigation wonder of our ancients. That was the grate tank at Kantale, which was built by Kind Mahasen the grate and renovated by the Kings Agbo II and Grate Parakramabahu. We turned right at Kantale to visit Seruwavila. While passing few kilometers in that road, we realized the difficulty of driving a vehicle with low ground clearance, in such a road being under constructed. Our vehicle was fully utilized & loaded. This was our annual family journey of the year 2010. |
