Padiyapelella Min worlds end and Eastland plains

First of all let me go to the past. It was in 2009 when Mithila suggested that lets start a trip report section on Lakdasun which was more of a Forum based web site and I was lucky enough to contribute the 2nd report to this archive which was my virgin hike to Sripada { Sri pada Off season and Mapalana (Mapanana) Falls(141m) }.

Eleventh Highest Peak of SL-Mahakudugala (2096m)

Mahakudugala is one of a peaks comes in Rawana legend. It says King Rawana’s body was hidden here 5000 years ago.
This is considered as the eleventh highest peak of Sri Lanka with 2096m height situated in Nuwara Eliya district.

Sensational Mandaram Nuwara – Tour de Waterfalls 15…

We walked close to 3km when out of nowhere came to see this gorgeous twin falls falling amid thick jungle. The real Kolapathana Ella is the one to the right, the one to the left is a seasonal cascade yet bigger and higher. This was something I won’t ever forget. The two white lines drawn amid the dark green background with touches of white was a painting that can only be drawn by the capable hands of the Mother Nature. The mist had covered the falls nearly completely when we arrived but I started singing “Mist, mist, go away – Come again another day” and as if on cue, the rain eased and the mist lifted calmly over the Piduruthalagala showing her prominent rocky slope. The radar site is located almost on the middle of the summit making it impossible to see from here and this angle. Sumanarathna mama too joined us now and Hariya went down to the base of the falls with him and Kiri while I stayed up and took hundreds of pictures.

Defying the Adverse Weather – Tour de Waterfalls 14…

However it didn’t appeal to Hari and we made plans hastily for Mandaram Nuwara. There was very little information about this mysterious place and we had to make do with what little was available. Credit must go to Hariya for planning the whole thing and we deliberated long and hard how to get there in the first place. Not having anyone else, it had to be just the two of us. Going by bike had to be ditched at the eleventh hour due to the rains and earth slips. So finally we decided to take the road via Kandy by bus. Getting Hariya up was as easy as lifting an elephant out of a well in an abandoned paddy field. Finally I picked him close to 5am on the christmas day, while most of the country was still under the wraps trying to get some warmth from the partial wintry chill. We went to the bus stand in Pettah while the rain kept its pace. There was an A/C bus that left for Kandy at 5.30am.

A Trip to Nuwara Eliya via Misty Mountains of Mandaramnuwara

We managed to reach Padiyapelalla via Kandy and Hanguranketha by about noon but the road condition was bad due to the road constructions that were taking place at that time.It was gloomy and raining in the morning which made us scared of a trip spoiled by rain. From Padiyapelalla we went to MA Eco bungalow at Elamulla and this stretch of road was carpeted and in very good condition. We were warmly welcomed by the manager of bungalow Mr. Janaka

Hunting Waterfalls from Rikillagaskada to Pussellawa

We continued passing Hanguranketha in our quest to visit some little known waterfalls we got to know thanks to Niroshan. But our journey was badly affected first by our delayed start and then by the terrible road condition past Hanguranketha. The road is under construction and is in a terrible state.

Unfamiliar cascades of Hanguranketha and Walapane area

Hanguranketha and Walapane (Electorate areas) cover a large area of central hills. There are a number of unfamiliar waterfalls in this area. During my journey I wanted to visit at these waterfalls. Although I visited them haphazardly for your convenience I will note down them in an order.

Archeological visit to Hanguranketha and Walapane

Ancient Hanguranketha palace was destroyed by British people in 1818 rebellion. Remained parts of the palace were used to build this temple. Therefore it is called “Maliga” මාලිගා and because of the presence of a large library called “Pothgul” පොත්ගුල්. The original carved stone door frame, moon stone and stone pillars can be seen here.

Mandaramnuwara, Piduruthalagala and Return to Nuwaraeliya

The journey started from different locations by my friends. Kandy Bus stand was the meeting point. I started from Ambalangoda at midnight and reached kandy at 6.00 in the morning. The others were there on time. We took padiyapalalla bus. The bus arrived in padiyapalalla at 8.00 am. There was a small town to buy our foods and other basic needs. We took Mandaram nuwara bus from there at 8.45 am.

Across the Hill Country

Started from Gampaha @ 4.30am in order to reach bandarawela before dusk knowing we had a long day before us. Was past kandy by 6.30am and padiyapelella by about 9am(road conditions were really bad). After getting directions from plenty of people, 1 person mentioned the above route (special remarks) which we decided to take. From padiyapelella took a road that led us to mathurata plantation tea estates to get to kurundu oya falls

“THE” trip of 2009

We started from Colombo at 3.00 in the morning. Had morning Tea at Hanguranketha at a Friend’s place then visited the first Waterfall of the trip – Katugasoya Ella which is along the B413 road at 30km post. Can go to base of the falls in 1 minute going through a private land where a guest house being constructed.
After this on the way to Walapane We stopped at Andawala Ella Which is also right by the road along the Hanguranketha
