When I planning my Adventure Tours-Part two book I thought to find some new locations. Hence I was searching for peaks above 2000m in terrain maps. Suddenly I noticed a peak above 2000m and with another 3 lines it means nearly 60m range. Fortunately that place much familiar to me as it was the base of Galaptiagala Mountain. Actually, it was situated at Udaweriya estate where the devil’s staircase route goes. Then when I checked the map further I found that it belongs to Uva province.
As we all know that the highest mountain in Uva province is Namunukula, but now I got confirmed that the highest mountain in Uva is not Namunukula, its Udaweriya I mountain. There is another mountain separately adjoining to this peak and it was named as Udaweriya II. The list of the highest mountains in Uva Province as below.
- Udaweriya – 2060m (6.794773, 80.865479)
- Namunukula – 2036m (6.933014, 81.113595)
- Meeriyathenna – 2016m (6.788733, 80.863480)
- Balathuduwa – 2012m (6.761555, 80.812673)
- Idalgashinna (Highest Peak) – 1960m (6.783974, 80.879964)
- Beragala Kanda – 1780m (6.773446, 80.915210)
- Wangedi Kanda – 1550m (6.761245, 80.824785)
- Narangala – 1527m (7.040238, 81.022066)
Then we came to Idalgashinna by train and started the hike from Idalgashinna to Udaweriya through a famous shortcut among these villagers. This is the easiest and shortest path to Devil’s Staircase through Bambarakanda side rather than walking from Ohiya. This route is not much famous among travelers since there are no much details about this route.
However, within a few hours we came to the middle of the mountains where the footpath goes to Udaweriya from Idalgashinna. Then we just walk to the peak as it not much harder. There were teas estates among the mountain hence it was very easy to tackle the path. Within few minutes we came to the top Udaweriya and we wonder about this viewpoint.
There was a massive view point up to Southern beach and from another side to Knuckles. We identified many mountains and some are couldn’t believable. As we checked through the binocular on a fully clear day we could see the southern beach and Hambantota harbor too.
After we got down from this peak and start climb the other peak which is the 3rd highest in Uva. Both peaks are having same magnificent view and both are suitable for a camping site too. From here we search some paths and a way to go to the summit of Idalgashinna original summit which is away from the lower Idalgashinna peak. As I saw in internet there were nobody who conquered Idalgashinna original summit which is nearly height about 1960m. All the people just went to the Idalgashinna lower peak which is height about 1800m and close to the railway station. As we did the same in the past we searched a path to reach to the Idalgashinna summit in near future.
