Reaching the top of Diyaluma waterfall

At 8.00am we caught a Wellawaya- Haputhale bus (Through Beragala) and got down near ice peella (අයිස් පීල්ල)- Nikapitiya road.

The road was fully concreted and we continued on foot towards Nikapitiya

After 1km we passed two places where water streams crossed the road. We felt like the climate is gradually changing from dry zone to wet zone.

After 1.7 kms we reached Medagoda village. Very calm water stream flows along right hand side of the road.

People in the village use this water by making a small anicut. We took a short rest here and continued towards Hiwalkandura village

After 500m we reached a junction and we chose the road which goes towards the A4. Other road continues to Nikapitiyagama village. We walked 0.5kms along the road and came to the A4 road. We waited there for more than 20mins for the Beragala bus.

Diyaluma Waterfall

Then we reached the observation point of the waterfall. Got some rest there

Diyaluma Falls

After checking weather in Poonagala mountains, we climbed half of one side of the waterfall. It gave nice views of the fall.

After 30mins we came back to the observation point beside “Diyaluma falls inn” rest (206km post) and discussed how to start the journey to the top of the falls. We decide to follow CEB lines to the Diyaluma rubber factory and then hike the mountain. At 1.30pm we started the journey.

The CEB line goes through a valley which we couldn’t cross and it took us some time to find the factory. After walking all over the Iluk jungle and we finally saw the factory. Then we crossed the stream and reached Diyaluma rubber factory. Then we asked directions from a villager.

At 1.30pm we started the journey.

We got directions from the villager and started to climb the hill along the foot path. We always kept to the right hand side trails. It was not an easy climb. After 30mins we came to a point where the foot path from Makuldeniya and we again followed the right hand route. At this point we could see some arrows directed to the top of the fall. After few mins we reached the top of the hill.

Now we could see the upper-diyaluma falls (I don’t know the exact name). The road was then divided to two. One goes to top of the upperDiyalima falls and other one goes to top of the Diyaluma falls. We followed the second path and reached the top of the Diyaluma falls.

After taking some rest there we visited the base of the upper Diyaluma falls as well. We had a bath there. There are lots of pools but only few were safe for bathing. At 4.00pm we started the return walk on the same path to the Diyaluma rubber factory. Because the transport concerns, we did it fast! There was a motorable road in front of the factory and we followed that road. On the way we could see the top of the water fall.

After 2.5kms we reached Buduruwagala reservoir and took some rest there

Then we continued and a special thing happened after 1km from there. We met our forum members (Priyanjan and his family, Sheham and his family). It was a memorial moment for us. We joined them up to the Car Park. This was the first time we met them after the second Lakdasun gathering. After visiting Buduruwagala ruins, they continued their journey and we stayed there until 3.00pm.
