The source of this breath-taking, 116m-high fall is the Kirindi Ella (stream), which flows from its starting point 940m up the Kuttapitiya Mountain. The stream travels 13km before the cascading point in the Kaluwaramukalana Jungle. It then flows via the Denawaka River to the Kaluganga River, located in the Bambarakotuwa Jungle. Local villagers say that there is a picture of a tortoise etched into stone here.
We started our journey from Piliyandala at around 6.30 in the morning. On our way we stopped somewhere near Horana to have our breakfast and reached the waterfall around 9.00 a.m.
From there you have to descend few steps to reach the viewing platform. There are around 430 steps in total up to the base of the waterfall.
After spending sometime in the viewing point we started to descend towards the base of the waterfall. Downhill journey is not that difficult and tiresome. It took around 30 mins for us to get to the base of the waterfall.
Since August is bit of a dry month the water levels were a bit low, we were able to cross the river and go near the waterfall base easily. If you rare visiting the waterfall during rainy season please be extra cautious as the rocks can be slippery.
If you need you can visit the top of the waterfall as well. Ask from the lady in the ticketing office and she’ll give you the directions. Unfortunately we couldn’t visit the top then since we were very exhausted from the journey uphill a bit tiresome.
Thank you very much for reading my trip report…Have a safe journey…..
